New Zealand is recognised as having a world-class, comprehensive, fish quota management system. To prevent overfishing, which is now a world-wide issue, most fish species that are caught by commercial fishing companies are managed under a quota system. That means the quantity of total fish caught is determined at the start of each fishing year, and this allowance is then shared between all commercial fishers, with each fisher only able to catch up to their maximum limit.
The system we have developed (Kiwa) tracks all fish processed by the fishing company, and links to the processing plant software and the accounting system to provide traceability on the source of the fish until they are sold. Kiwa also gathers sales information, and pays the fisher either based on the final sale price achieved, or on a fixed price. Kiwa also reports the data for fish processed each month to the government agency (Ministry of Primary Industries) to ensure that the fisher stays within their quota limits.
